Structural Engineer: Float Structures Professional photographer: Felix Speller/ @felixspeller From the Architect:”Vaulting loft inhabits the 2nd

floor of a removed Victorian-era house in Hampstead, London. Our clients are a family who are based abroad however invest a lot of time visiting London for a couple of days to a couple of weeks at a time. This flat is their London base. The plan infills a valley that existed between 2 parallel roof ridges, producing an expansive new flat roofing and a grand floor-to-ceiling height listed below. The extension allowed us to reconfigure what was formerly a two-bedroom top-floor flat into 3 bed rooms. The impressive height developed an opportunity to insert a mezzanine flooring. “In September 2023, we began on-site by fully demolishing the existing roofing system, making

way for an entirely brand-new roofing which enabled us to expose and express the roof structure. It also enabled us to take full advantage of floor-to-ceiling height whilst making considerable improvement to the roofing’s thermal performance, which will have an extremely positive result on future energy consumption and bills. Moving through the flat, the new vibrant roofing system kind moves with you, at times soaring high creating a grand and extensive sense of area, whilst at others it falls low, producing minutes of more human scale and intimacy.”The volume listed below the mezzanine is developed as a solid lumber block out of which area is’carved ‘for circulation to

the three bed rooms, storage, and a visitor restroom. This sculptural block is articulated in warm aak, inside and out, contrasting with the broader, white space from which it emerges.”
