Villa Savoye residential villa designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in Poissy, France, was completed in 1931 and represents the full realization of the Five Points of Modern Architecture. Commissioned in 1928 by Pierre and Eugénie Savoye as a weekend residence overlooking the Seine valley, the house consolidates Le Corbusier’s theoretical framework and stands as a manifesto of early Modernism within the International Style. Built with reinforced concrete and the Dom-Ino structural system, the design elevates the volume on pilotis, employs a free plan and free façade, integrates ribbon windows, and reclaims ground through a roof terrace and solarium. A modular grid informed by Golden Section proportions organizes the plan, while the curved ground floor responds to the turning radius of 1929 automobiles, incorporating vehicular movement into the composition. Circulation follows an architectural promenade structured by a central ramp connecting the entrance, salon, terrace, and solarium. Service areas occupy the ground level, while living spaces above are oriented to solar exposure and defined by sliding glass partitions and architectural polychromy. Early roof leaks and material failures revealed technical limitations, and wartime occupation led to deterioration before designation as a French Historic Monument in 1965 secured preservation. Restoration campaigns and inclusion in the 2016 UNESCO World Heritage inscription confirmed its lasting influence on twentieth-century architectural discourse.

Villa Savoye residential villa designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in Poissy, France, has redefined domestic architecture through the full realization of the Five Points of Modern Architecture and was completed in 1931. The house consolidates Le Corbusier’s theoretical framework into built form and stands as a manifesto of early Modernism and a decisive reference within the International Style. Commissioned in 1928 by Pierre and Eugénie Savoye as a weekend residence on their 7-hectare property overlooking the Seine valley, the project offered the architect unusual freedom to implement his architectural principles.

Construction between 1928 and 1931 employed reinforced concrete and the Dom-Ino structural system. Pilotis elevate the main volume above the meadow, extending the landscape beneath and eliminating the need for load-bearing walls. Free plan organization ensures spatial continuity across service and living levels, while the free façade separates the envelope from structural constraints. Ribbon windows introduce horizontal continuity and controlled daylight. The roof terrace reclaims the occupied ground as an outdoor living space and culminates in a solarium.

The plan follows a modular grid initially set at 5 meters and later reduced to 4.75 meters to control cost. Golden Section ratios regulate the geometry and guide the position of the entrance and central ramp. Integration of the automobile informs the architectural concept: ground-floor curvature corresponds to the turning radius of 1929 automobiles, allowing vehicles to pass beneath the elevated volume and access the garage. Curved glazing at the entrance aligns with this movement, translating mobility into spatial order.

Circulation unfolds as an architectural promenade. A central ramp begins at the entrance hall, rises to the first-floor salon, and continues toward the roof terrace and solarium, while a stair establishes a parallel vertical route. Gradual movement structures perception through shifting relationships between interior and exterior. Ground level accommodates service functions, including garage and staff rooms. The first floor contains the master bedroom, son’s bedroom, guest room, kitchen, salon, and terraces. Solar orientation informs placement: the salon faces southeast, the terrace east, and the kitchen southwest. The second-floor solarium forms sculpted roof volumes protected by curved walls. Sliding glass partitions mediate between living spaces and the terrace, while architectural polychromy and built-in furnishings integrate structure and interior.

Technical deficiencies emerged shortly after completion. Roof leakage, thermal inefficiency, and cracking concrete required repeated repairs. Absence of visible downpipes contributed to water damage, revealing tension between formal clarity and construction practice. Requisition by German and later American forces during World War II resulted in deterioration. Expropriation by the town of Poissy in 1958 placed the building at risk of demolition before international advocacy and the intervention of André Malraux secured preservation. Designation as a French Historic Monument followed in 1965 during Le Corbusier’s lifetime.

Restoration campaigns began in 1963, with major state-funded works between 1985 and 1997 addressing façade deterioration, waterproofing, structural repair, and interior polychromy. The Gardener’s Lodge at the entrance, a 45 m² minimal dwelling reflecting CIAM principles, underwent subsequent restoration, including works completed in 2015 and conservation efforts in 2022.

Influence on twentieth-century architectural discourse was reinforced through publication in The International Style (1932) and critical analysis such as Colin Rowe’s comparison to Palladio’s Villa Rotonda. Inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage inscription “The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier” in 2016 affirmed its international significance. The house remains open to the public under the care of the Centre des monuments nationaux and continues to function as a reference point in modern residential architecture.
