At Hope Plaza, an outpatient facility part of the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, California, CO Architects made the most of patient comfort to promote wellness through biophilic design. Each face of the building was distinctively tuned to reflect this goal. A space that cuts through the massing of the structure recalls the winding shape of a river snaking through a canyon wall. Similarly, anodized metal panels offer the impression of a sunset in the middle of the mountainous landscape. The referrals to nature are fitting, offered the health campus’s place at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains.

Ted Schwartz Household Hope and Healing Park. The east, west, and south exteriors of Hope Plaza were dressed in chevron-shaped, anodized metal panels. The champagne-colored

panels shimmer in the daytime and fade into the backdrop of the mountainous landscape, especially at sunset.
