“I’m a big ideas individual and then John elevates them and takes them to the next level,” states Upton, who had particular environments in mind for each room. Her vision of a green cooking area, for example, gave way to cabinetry in a shamrock color and walls wrapped in a sparkling de Gournay scenic landscape. When Upton and Verlander selected a home theater rather than a proper dining room, Ruggiero conjured a moody lounge slicked in a blackberry paint, festooned with heavy velour curtains, and crowned by a graphic Iksel wallpaper. It’s now among their preferred areas, where mother and father can drink mixed drinks with buddies while their child, Genevieve, plays Legos close by. “Just existing highlights a different side of us,” explains Verlander. “We listen to jazz or symphonic music. It’s such an ambiance.”
To complete that environment, Ruggiero layered vintage and antique furnishings, consisting of retro seating by Paul McCobb, Vladimir Kagan, and Giancarlo Piretti. Custom pieces, on the other hand, are customized to his clients’ particular needs. The entry’s velvet-and-walnut bench, for example, can skillfully stow packages and shoes. The couple’s bed, meanwhile, is at a slightly raised height so that they can enjoy city views. When it comes to their daughter, one of her couple of requests was purple walls, versus which Ruggiero incorporated a bespoke bed upholstered with a Josef Frank pattern by Schumacher.
