For almost a years, Andrew Mariani, the creator of Scribe Winery, held on to a home a couple of miles from his Sonoma vineyard, certain it was worthy of a second act. The run-down, single-room adobe, dates to 1847, making it among the earliest surviving structures in Northern California. The landmarked structure as soon as served as the home of the town’s mayor, an unruly figure whose period ended when famous Union military leader William T. Sherman arrived at its door to position him under arrest. Mariani constantly intended to do something with the storied home, but precisely what remained uncertain.

The landmarked property retains its initial adobe architecture, with Post Business’s addition carefully tucked out of view. The structure is now a guesthouse and supplementary venue for Scribe Winery events.

Mariani talked about the building’s possibilities with Leigh Salem of multidisciplinary design company Post Company, however the task “didn’t follow a standard design technique,” Salem discusses. At one point, Mariani thought about making the lodging his own home, once his family grew to consist of 3 kids, the idea showed not practical. In 2025, after 4 years of work, the procedure yielded a versatile home that now serves both as a hospitality area for Scribe Winery events and a guest retreat for extended household.

The home’s centerpiece is the extensive dining room, set within the initial 1847 adobe. Post Business sourced the table at Round Top, the storied Texas antiques fair, while the vintage chairs– initially from a Dutch church– were acquired through Amsterdam Modern.
