The hallmark of this project depends on the restoration of the history and memories etched in the land into a contemporary spatial experience, rather than a superficial reproduction. Utilizing the context of the 1926 Kyomachibori Structure website as a guide, we changed a wooden structure inspired by the Kura (storehouses)– symbols of the city’s past as a center of logistics and commerce– into a setup using recovered wood and standard carpentry strategies. Additionally, elements such as reliefs, doors, and mailboxes used in the former Kyomachibori Structure were reconfigured and incorporated throughout as art and spatial components. By abstracting memories of the past and converting them into brand-new value, we have actually recognized an unique city hotel experience that brings serenity and depth to the city.
What influenced you to come up with this job? What were your intentions, thoughts and so on? Where did you get the motivation for this style or project? What is the technical or research background?The inspiration for this task lay in rebuilding the memories accumulated within the land and architecture– frequently lost in thick metropolitan environments– into a modern stay experience. The site, Kyomachibori in Osaka, developed as a hub for commerce and logistics, forming a cityscape lined with Kura(storehouses ), while the 1926 Kyomachibori Building long acted as a cherished landmark. Rather than a shallow reproduction of history, we abstracted the structural rationality of the warehouses and the memories of the initial outside reliefs and fixtures, re-editing them into spatial components. The reconfiguration of reclaimed wood and existing elements, in addition to the application of conventional carpentry strategies, is based on useful research study aimed at upgrading past values and connecting them to the future. Our objective was to present a new kind of metropolitan hotel where the memories of architecture and the city breathe silently.
How was the design made?The production of this task started with an analysis of the history of Kyomachibori, where it developed as a center for logistics and commerce, and where Kura(storehouses)supported both the cityscape and its functions. We focused on the logical approach and structure of the Kura– preservation, accumulation, and circulation– and embraced a style technique that translates these ideas into a contemporary hotel area. The wood structure in the lobby, assembled using standard woodworking strategies with reclaimed wood of various histories, functions as a spatial gadget that abstracts the framework of a Kura. This structure is not merely ornamental; it was prepared as a frame to produce human flow, sightlines, and areas for remaining. Throughout the overall style, the principles of repetition, depth, and margin found in Kura were applied to the spatial structure, incorporating historic rationality with contemporary convenience. By reinterpreting the memory of the land at a structural level, we realized a new form of urban hotel.
Please inform me more about the wood structure which is the feature of the hotel?The wood structure at the center of the lobby is a setup that modernly reinterprets the framework of an Edo-period Kura(warehouse). The reclaimed wood used was meticulously chosen and reinforced, put together with joints based on traditional carpentry strategies, and designed with a modular layout considering load-bearing capability and visual depth. The repeated patterns and layered structure of the beams and columns predict the balanced qualities and Yohaku (margins) distinct to Kura into the space. By finely changing the texture of the materials, the expression of the knots, and the color tones of the surfaces, a tranquil experience that reduces metropolitan noise is offered. The structure itself keeps its own creative stability; incorporated with lighting and circulation planning, the style naturally guides visitors’ look, allowing them to experience the spirit of the Kura and the memory of the city.How can this item be operated, how does it change, how the interaction happens, what are the essential frames, how does it deal a better result, why does it carry out much better: Upon arrival, visitors are invited by a large decorative timber structure at the entryway, leading them into the lobby while stimulating the history and memories of Kyomachibori. Guests can freely flow through the reception, restaurant, and coffee shop & bar, where ornamental components and artwork from the previous Kyomachibori Building are spread throughout, carefully connecting the past and the present. The style, which abstracts the lumber devices and the kinds of Kura(storehouses), develops a sense of unity and heat within the space, allowing visitors to naturally enjoy their own time while remaining distanced from the city bustle.
