Ateno embeds Olen resort into a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea Ateno Architecture Studio’s Olen Resort unfolds throughout a beachfront, amphitheatrical plot in Syros, Greece, defined by a high southward slope and an undisturbed view of the Aegean Sea. The primary difficulty of the task was to satisfy complicated functional requirements while appreciating the morphology of the surface. Olen is a structure of 3 morphological systems: a Point, a Line, and a Plane. A property complex set up on three levels, combining immersed and above-ground structures.

all images by Yiorgis Yerolympos a Point, a Line, and an Airplane: 3 morphological systems shape Olen At the highest point unfolds the Airplane: a common space for all citizens. The positioning of an arched maintaining wall produces a welcome, at the same time serving as a conduit for vertical circulation, ramps and stairs, and as a component that integrates an immersed structure hosting living and common spaces. The wall defines the layout of the terrace, the Plane, where three independent guest systems are placed. Centrally situated is the Line: an immersed rectangular building housing two autonomous living spaces, whose outside locations can be unified or separated. Due to the building’s obstacle from the longitudinal shading overhang, the presence of the exterior is decreased. The Line functions as a quiet background to the complexity of the overlying structures. At the most affordable level, in immediate distance to the sea, lies the Point: an independent below ground guesthouse, separated and unnoticeable to all. At the Point, one can stop briefly, listen to the serenity of nature and the sound of the waves. With the intent to vanish, the structure by Ateno Architecture Studio is built from products sourced on-site. Only the circular balcony stays visible, a plateau towards the Aegean.
