The Scoop is a contemporary office complex in Southwark that reimagines an existing 4 floor structure through adaptive reuse, extension, and a highly meaningful exterior intervention. Created by Corstorphine & Wright, the project presents a concave, semi-circular void carved into the southern elevation, forming a clear architectural reaction to its conservation area context. Positioned together with the Grade II listed Church of one of the most Precious Blood, the building aligns its ground floor with the historical exterior while framing the church’s circular window through the scooped type. Kept material is combined with new building and construction to increase office capability, deliver Cat A work space, and produce a roof garden with views throughout central London. Merged by white glazed brickwork, the finished structure achieves a BREEAM Exceptional rating and shows how contemporary architecture can engage sensitively with heritage environments.

The Scoop treats contextual restrictions as a catalyst for architectural innovation instead of limitation. Set within the Union Street Sanctuary and surrounded by cultural organizations, the task embraces subtraction as a defining strategy, forming the building through an intentional elimination of mass. This technique enables the brand-new intervention to assert an unique identity while maintaining a respectful relationship with its historic neighbours.

By sculpting a semi-circular space into the southern elevation, the design establishes a visual bridge between Union Street and the surrounding church, reconnecting views that were previously obstructed. The gesture enhances the legibility of the church within the streetscape while introducing a civic minute at the heart of the structure’s composition. These elements are carefully incorporated with the new extension through making use of white glazed brick, developing connection between old and new construction. The material choice lends the constructing a fine-tuned, luminescent quality and reinforces its sculptural existence without frustrating the surrounding context. Internally, the building has actually been reconfigured to support modern office usage, providing versatile Cat An areas alongside an upward extension that increases flooring area. The addition of a roof garden uses residents outside feature and extensive views across London, while sustainability steps embedded throughout the design contribute to the job’s BREEAM Excellent score. Together, these techniques position The Scoop as a measured yet positive example of adaptive reuse within a sensitive historic setting.
