that they didn’t understand how challenging the project would be– from the logistics of operating in a remote corner of Portugal to the complexities of farming and land stewardship in an unknown environment. “Trying to get the information that were important to us from miles and miles away was a constant source of stress,” Berkus says.Was it worth it? Berkus and Brent rapidly found that communication was the most significant obstacle to refurbishing a property in Portugal. To that end, even before they closed on the home, they employed a job manager fluent in both Portuguese and English who supervised the restoration from beginning to end. They urge anybody thinking about purchasing residential or commercial property in Portugal– or anywhere you do not speak the language– to do the same. “The manager can function as a bridge, accompany you throughout the entire procedure, and offer assistance in picking and monitoring the task and construction teams,” Brent says.For the building and construction work, the designers advise trying to find professionals who are currently dealing with projects of a comparable scale and checking out a few of their recently finished jobs. Don’t dismiss business specialists for a domestic job:”They tend to be well-organized, “Berkus notes.Another idea: If you plan to deliver or keep products or materials from abroad, get a custom-mades broker and storage supplier.
