‘We are deeply saddened to reveal the passing of Georg Baselitz, a titan of contemporary painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking,‘ reads a statement shared following his death, which was revealed Thursday, April 30th, 2026. ‘A canonical innovator and among the most essential artists of our time, he had an extensive influence on his fellow artists and the international art world throughout his career.‘
His works, held in significant museum collections worldwide, stand as long-lasting markers of this impact.

He established a particular visual vocabulary, a lot of famously turning his subjects upside down to disrupt conventional methods of seeing and to reframe the relationship between image and viewer.
As kept in mind in the obituary by Robert Isaf, he ‘defined German visual art for a generation,’ and created work ingrained within a larger cultural and historical narrative.

Reviewing his profession in 2026, Baselitz reflected on its scope and conclusion: ‘I have a long bio to look back on. I have painted an extremely large number of photos throughout more than 60 years … Now that I’m basically at the end of my painting activity, I believed I ought to draw some type of conclusion.‘
