Phoebe Gates, the youngest of Expense and Melinda French Gates’s three daughters, is accustomed to nice things. She grew up in a $127 million compound with a personal beach, 20-car garage, and “trampoline space.” She participated in Stanford, of course. And in 2015, she dropped her suitcases at her sis’s location in New york city: a $51 million penthouse at celebrity-stuffed 443 Greenwich Street. However she isn’t in the area to ogle property. Last year, Gates was called to the Forbes “30-Under-30” list for founding a shopping start-up, Phia. It just recently raised $35.5 million from a list of investors that includes a shocking variety of influencers and celebs, consisting of Jessica Alba, Khloé Kardashian, and Karlie Kloss. And as the Real Deal reported this week, Phia is now renting a flashy new workplace in the Flatiron tech passage branded “Silicon Alley.”

The 8,900-square-foot lease isn’t far from where Phia was already situated, at 200 Park Avenue on the corner of East 17th Street. However this might be better: the top flooring of a freshly remodelled ten-story building on East 18th Street, just above Union Square. The building is a couple of doors below the Old Town Bar (happy hour, anyone?), and other readily available listings in the structure show a hefty 19th-century business structure refurbished for modern-day tastes: terrazzo floorings, a wood-paneled lobby, and a landscaped roof garden furnished with couches. The Real Offer didn’t get the lease price, but a class A workplace in a location long connected with tech start-ups isn’t low-cost.

Gates pitches Phia as the “Google Flights of style,” an app and web browser extension that compares prices across 40,000 fashion sites, consisting of resellers, to emerge the very best deals. She told a reporter this spring that the business had about 20 staff members, some employed “from good old-fashioned cold DMs.” Gates is simply 23, and there’s some hesitation about how the app truly works and whether it will ever end up being rewarding. She also does not have much of a work history. Her LinkedIn profile shows a two-month internship at British Vogue and a one-month internship at a health-care not-for-profit in Rwanda. Still, like the other AI creators grabbing New york city’s most significant and snazziest spaces, Gates might see a brick-and-mortar office as a way to burnish her company’s reputation or, in the language of Silicon Valley, court brand-new investments.
