Located in an 18th-century canal home in the center of Amsterdam, Two Story becomes part of a heartening art world trend: the reimagined gallery as a mix exhibition space, shop, and cafe (see our report on 13 examples worldwide). This one is the creation of Linde Brentjens and Justus Klabou, a young couple with backgrounds in retail and hospitality, who worked with emerging Copenhagen company Atelier Axo on a complete interior overhaul.

Linde writes that they envisioned the opposite of the daunting white cube: “we desired an area that feels more like a home than a gallery– familiar adequate to be approachable and soothing to all, modern enough to hold area for the pieces and items we offer a home to.” They fell for images of Atelier Axo’s Dining establishment Bobe, a Remodelista favorite, and knew they were the ones to do the “spatial storytelling.”

Designer Caroline Sillesen and designer Rose Hermansen reacted by changing 2 floors completely doing not have in straight lines into a stunningly cohesive and peaceful gathering space, a place that feels every bit as made up and interesting as the paintings on view.
