3 school volumes sit at the edge of Parma’s rural landscape Found in Sissa, a town in the lower Emilian plain near the Po River in Parma, Italy, the primary school by AAA office inhabits the transition between the city edge and the surrounding agricultural landscape. Established throughout the executive design phase following an integrated procurement competition, the task revises the initial proposal through changes to its percentages, structural system, and building and construction details, with the goal of strengthening the relationship between the building and its context. The two-story school accommodates as much as 250 trainees and includes 10 class, 6 laboratories, 4 of which can be subdivided into additional teaching spaces, a 90-seat lunchroom, and a 700-sqm Type B1 gym created for both school and community usage. Landscape combination, ecological efficiency, and contextual connection guide the overall style strategy.
The structure is organized into three distinct volumes corresponding to its primary functions: class, gymnasium, and cafeteria. This plan establishes a clear hierarchy while permitting each volume to react separately to the surrounding site. The compact geometries of the health club and lunchroom contrast with the classroom block, where a series of tall, narrow windows presents rhythm across the exteriors. Their vertical proportion references the rows of trees, vineyards, and drainage channels particular of the surrounding farming landscape while strengthening visual connections between interior spaces and the outside. Class form the focus of the project. Existing glazing techniques were modified through the intro of vertical strip windows that increase the quantity of diffuse natural daytime while keeping visual contact with the landscape. Within the class, wood beams are aligned with the window frames, deliberately exposing the structural system as part of the interior architectural language.

all images thanks to AAA workplace Product choices by AAA workplace draw from Parma’s countryside The exteriors embrace restrained geometries, material surfaces, and colors derived from the surrounding landscape rather than conventional academic structures. Steel trellis structures set up on the east and west elevations support climbing up plant life, offering seasonal shading while adding to the ecological performance of the envelope. Surface area textures and product surfaces were picked to strengthen the tactile quality of the structure and develop continuity between architecture and landscape. Ground-floor classrooms open directly onto the surrounding gardens, enabling outside spaces to support teaching and leisure. The landscape style broadens the original proposal through the intro of a paved courtyard nearby to the lunchroom, developing an additional outside area for post-meal activities and informal gathering. Internally, the entryway hall and lunchroom run as a constant spatial series, strengthening flow and shared usage.
The structural system, developed by Italian practice AAA workplace, combines premade cross-laminated lumber (X-lam) wall panels with timber columns supported by an insulated strengthened concrete slab. The facade composition follows a 60-cm module coordinated with both the structural grid and the external cladding. Upraised wood aspects were provided ready for assembly, decreasing construction time while streamlining website logistics and limiting ecological effect. Interior spaces are ended up in a restrained scheme of white with accents of pastel pink, blue, and green. Rather than relying on irreversible graphic treatments, the interiors are created to accommodate work produced by trainees, permitting the finding out environment to progress gradually while enhancing the relationship between the building and its academic function.
