Homes We Love: Every day we feature a remarkable space submitted by our neighborhood of designers, designers, home builders, and property owners. Have one to share? Post it here.Project Information: Location: Melbourne, Australia From the Architect: “At the end of the school

day, some household homes feel more like recreation center: schoolmates and neighbors bustling in and out, sharing in homework, hobbies, art tasks and food; practicing music, preparing unscripted suppers, cooking up magical potions, all the while regaling with stories of the day’s adventures. Mess Hall is this kind of home. When a common 19th-century Victorian terrace with narrow corridors, shadowy rooms, and a quiet rule, the ground floor now provides a big, light-filled, inviting hall– a nearly civic space– adaptable to the whims of household, friends, and creative collaborators.”And yet the house maintains some of its procedure. Upon entry and preceding

the main hall, an intimate parlor uses break: a location for quiet discussion, reading, or music practice, where dark timber bookshelves are the background to a collection of vintage furnishings pieces. Similarly, a little studio at the end of the garden is a place for writing, painting and peaceful retreat; a backyard skillion, improved and simplified.”Between the parlor and the garden studio, the primary hall

is the connective tissue, drawing the various state of minds and functions of the house together, with a material combination that balances peaceful formality with bright informality; light and shade.”
