In the 10 plus years because Chase Dining Hall resumed at Rams Head Plaza on South Campus, the area has actually been adjusted a number of times. Dining space was minimized from two floors to one and a Starbucks changed a location on level one. The goals of this architectural task were to add 150-200 seats to meet current need and produce a brand-new dining destination for trainees living in the South School dormitories.

To meet the client’s vision for an ingenious, attractive trainee facility, the Szostak Design, Inc. group designed a 3,950-square-foot glass structure addition that includes a brand-new food service place and flexible seating location. The glass structure envelope takes full advantage of visual transparency and maintains the sense of open space in a high-traffic pedestrian passage.

The roof design features skylights to optimize daylighting in the dining location and a glass canopy to supply defense from solar glare and the components. Multi-slide doors can open the seating area to the plaza and pocket doors between the seating area and the cooking area can isolate the two areas, when needed. The pavilion can likewise be separated from the existing dining hall during low-traffic hours or to host a class or event.

Since the structure is sited on the top level of an existing parking garage, there are only two existing columns under the plaza that were used for assistance. Steel beams running east-west bear on a steel truss that sits on the two existing columns inside the structure.

The beams cantilever out 36 feet from the truss on the west side, and are connected to an existing beam on the east side. They are made of two W shapes bonded together to make the most of inertia and facilitate the lifting of material from the lay down area 30 feet below the plaza level, and are created to allow for mechanical ducts around the edges of the structure.

The project also consisted of restorations to the 29,786-SF of existing interior area. Existing food filling station received brand-new equipment to much better serve student needs and new surfaces match the pavilion and bring cohesion to the area.
