THRESHOLD TURNS LIGHT INTO A RESPONSIVE ARCHITECTURAL VOLUME

For Nuit Blanche 2026, light artist Emilio Ferro presents Limit, a site-specific light and sound setup conceived for the Chapelle Expiatoire in Paris. The job checks out the concept of the threshold as both a physical and perceptual condition. Positioned within the chapel, a powerful beam of white light emerges from a very little metal structure and extends through the architecture, creating a luminescent volume that appears concrete in spite of being entirely immaterial. Rather than working as a fixed object, the installation continually changes in action to the site itself. The opening and closing of the chapel impact the behavior of the light: when the building opens to the outside, the beam extends towards the surrounding garden; when the area closes, the light retracts and settles onto the interior architectural surfaces. This produces an ongoing discussion between exterior and interior area, permanence and change. Roberto Conte photographs the task.

Their movement through the chapel presents subtle variations in the perception of the setup, producing an environment that continuously moves according to existence, duration, and perspective. An original noise structure accompanies the experience. Established from magnetic field frequencies tape-recorded by the artist and subsequently revamped, the sound expands the installation beyond the visual realm, creating a suspended environment in which area and time appear to decrease. With Threshold, Emilio Ferro transforms light into a perceptual material capable of redefining architecture and producing an intermediate territory between product and immaterial realities.
