“22YB1 is a house and studioarea in central Hanoi. The job is a full remodelling of an early-1990s tube house, a primary specific real estate typology that typically presents challenges in regards to comfort and toughness due to its dark, stuffy spaces. The main spatial and structural interventions hence include relocating the staircase from the middle to the back of the plot and removing transverse partitions to open up all the layout, producing bigger spaces that allow for air and light to travel through. To make sure a new type of thermal convenience and energy performance, the facades are likewise based on an upgrade: the front is reconditioned in an effort to preserve traces of the old facade while the rear end is entirely remodeled with glass bricks to generate natural ambient light. New windows and an open stairwell now help accommodate much better cross and stack ventilation.” The existing concrete column-beam structure with brick infill is enhanced where required while
a galvanized steel structure covered in an insulated corrugated sheet metal envelope is added as a roofing system extension. The overall choice of surfaces remains easy(easy-to-maintain granito and raw concrete surface areas, white-painted walls and ceilings )while touches of colors (bright yellow ceramic, royal blue oil-stained wood, lacquer red steel)pertain to stress the structure’s sincerity. Bas-reliefs on the front facade suggest the building’s address and year of conclusion as a nod to the regional century-old practice of acknowledging the (re)birth of the house through an architectural gesture. In the long tradition of shophouses, the ground flooring is utilized as a work area(our architecture studio )while the rest of the home is developed for non-nuclear living and hosting friends and family. “
