students Design a Structure Around Reuse and Reversibility Established and built by students from Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with the Innsbruck-based collectives Gans Anders and Bonanza, the Gabonsa Pavilion is a momentary structure produced for the Gabonsa Music Celebration at the Rossau Recreation Center in Innsbruck, Austria. Created as an expedition of circular construction and product reuse, the pavilion integrates simple timber elements, reversible connections, and standard building products to examine how short-term architecture can create adaptable public space with very little resources. The job forms part of a wider initiative to reactivate
the previous municipal landfill website through cultural events. Placed in between the festival’s main phase and workshop location, the pavilion operates simultaneously as a seating landscape, seeing platform, meeting point, and landmark. Established through collaboration with the celebration organizers and in reaction to the site’s topography, the structure occupies a small hill, where its terraced kind frames views across the surrounding landscape while supplying a series of areas for sitting, reclining, and gathering. The building and construction follows principles of simplicity, reversibility,
and resource efficiency. Developed totally from 4-meter wood beams connected with screw joints, the pavilion avoids adhesives and other irreversible wet connections, permitting the structure to be fully taken apart after the festival. Wood members were cut just where structurally needed, enabling most elements to be reused in their original measurements for future jobs. all images by © Toni Schade unless stated otherwise Reversible Building And Construction System Supports Flexible Celebration Use
Alongside the lumber structure, the job reinterprets standard construction materials as architectural elements. A semicircular volume clad in reflective construction foil mirrors the surrounding sky and mountain landscape, visually extending the site while developing the pavilion as a recognizable function within the celebration grounds. An aluminum vapor barrier forms a lightweight canopy that supplies shade, while an orange construction safeguard suspended underneath it functions as a hammock, transforming a familiar building product into a place for rest. Red-painted bracing components express the structural system, making the building readable, while ground screws and red stress straps anchor the pavilion with minimal influence on the site and assist in total disassembly.
The structure, constructed by trainees from Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences, accommodates various patterns of usage throughout the festival premises. Facing the primary stage, it forms a stepped grandstand for performances, while the opposite side transitions into a more protected environment adjacent to the workshop location. Instead of developing a confined structure, the task develops an open spatial framework that mediates between landscape, visitors, and festival activities through its adaptable structure, product economy, and reversible building system.
