Photos by Gonzalo Viramonte Home 1954, Cordoba, Argentina English text (scroll down for Spanish): The project proposes the restoration and reprogramming of a 170 m ² corner home integrated in 1954 in Villa María, a mid-sized city in the interior of Córdoba, Argentina. The intervention restructures the program into 2 constant and interconnected functional blocks– public and private. Fixed uses are dealt with through a self-governing monolithic module that focuses services and frees the staying space, permitting versatility and reversibility gradually.

The use of available materials and local building methods reinforces a commitment to the Argentine context, comprehending design as a found act that reacts to what is available and to the genuine conditions of the area. Within this structure, brick– an aspect deeply rooted in Córdoba’s structure culture– is reinterpreted through an alteration of its standard reasoning. Suspended within an independent steel structure, the brick abandons its monolithic condition, separates from the load-bearing aircraft, and redefines the spatial limit.

Space acquires the same importance as matter: the component ceases to be a wall and ends up being an experience. Light travel through it, seasons modify its perceptual density, and the motion of the user triggers a dynamic play of shadows and transparencies. In this way, a “space within a space” is built, where the spatial experience unfolds through successive layers of materiality.

Exposed concrete, steel, stone, brick, and wood are presented without artifice, in a workout of material honesty that reveals the positive procedure. There are no claddings or simulations; each material expresses its structural and sensory nature.

The suspended brick component brings a sense of incompletion, nearly provisional in character.

It presents tension. Brick becomes ethereal, lightweight, mutable, and fluid, expanding its symbolic and spatial possibilities. The job is a tribute to a deep understanding of the nature of materials, conceived in a state of permanent transition. It suggests that architecture is not a definitive state however a continuous settlement between matter, time, inhabitation, and context.

There is a gesture of regard, but also of controlled irreverence. The material itself is not altered; its will to be is changed. Development lies not in the object, but in the reasoning.
