Photography, thanks to OMA and Continental Development Corporation Metropolitan Town– Taipei Xinyi-Wenchang Residence Design The Metropolitan Town, a new high rise domestic tower developed by OMA’s David Gianotten and Chiaju Lin, has peaked in Taipei’s Xinyi central enterprise zone. The 23-storey structure introduces a vertical village principle shaped by the progressively fluid boundary between living and working in post pandemic Taipei, also the city’s diverse city conditions. The tower includes
interlocking volumes organized around a main services core, each identified by its own exterior. This composition produces more than 30 system types– from 68 sqm studios fit to songs working primarily from home to 165 sqm family apartments with generous cooking areas. The majority of systems procedure 120 sqm and can be flexibly adjusted for living, working, or leisure. Shared facilities are dispersed throughout the building, including a company
center and conference room on the ground floor, and a library, bar, and dining establishments positioned at heights aligned with the rooftops of adjacent buildings. A gym and communal balconies on the roofing offer expansive views across the city. Together, these spaces form an elevated social landscape that supports neighborhood and work life balance.The aggregation of volumes responds to the contrasting metropolitan scales of the site: the large scale Xinyi district at the front and the finer grained Wenchang area behind. To improve connectivity, the lower volumes are raised to produce a brand-new pedestrian passage connecting both locations. The exterior integrates glass and coated aluminum panels, with patterned glass– commonly used in older Taiwanese interiors– applied as balustrades in areas needing less privacy, producing a mosaic like expression of domestic activity.
Commissioned by Continental Advancement Corporation, the project began in 2024 and is scheduled for conclusion in 2027.
