Today, a library, cultural spaces, and community services form a civic complex set within a 13-acre website, crisscrossed with pathways, rest areas, and an active movement network linking neighbouring districts. In partnership with the firm Cardin Julien, the team reimagined the site through a transdisciplinary lens– as a place for gathering, social connection, and engagement with nature.Open to the public because 2024, the landscape progresses and gradually becomes wilder with the seasons: spontaneous plants takes hold, and biodiversity returns. Its charm is neither immediate nor fixed. A site in requirement of repair work When forested, and later transformed to agricultural usage, the land hosted a BASF petrochemical plant throughout the 1970s and 1980s, leaving an enduring mark on the territory and its identity. Following decontamination by the City of Laval, it stayed an abject brownfield, a testament to profound industrial transformation.Fertile clay soils, proximity to wetlands, and the natural capacity for water retention notified a regeneration-based technique, where it now runs easily, landforms direct its flow, trees revitalize the air, and biodiversity is reclaiming its

place.When water ends up being the foundation of the land On site, hydrology emerges as both a dynamic function and a reflective aspect. A network of permeable paths, drain trenches, and interconnected basins records 100%of rainwater and overflow, slowly

directing it through the landscape. These basins operate as wetlands, promoting wildlife environments and promoting biodiversity. Sedimentation wells capture particles from the roadway overflow before the water gets in the basin network. In time, the tree canopy will grow to cover the space, mitigating

heat islands and making sure a progressive shift to the surrounding natural spaces.Experience and temporality The job offers the unusual experience of a forest-like landscape within a recognized city context. A footbridge and 2 observation platforms offer access to the basins and the mature trees protected on site, while birdhouses support wildlife activity. The sounds of water and wind slowly change the hum of traffic.Each season transforms understandings. The textures, plant life layers, and microhabitats create a sensory experience that soothes and slows, offering a minute of break amid urban density and overstimulation.Disciplinary synergy From the earliest phases, Projet Paysage and architecture company Cardin Julien combined their knowledge to develop a civic area where architecture and landscape react to and structure one another.

This collaboration stems not from mere official adjustments, however from a shared responsibility in forming public spaces.The building works as a centerpiece, while the landscape guides movement and the overall rhythm.

Its bioclimatic orientation– lined up along an east-west axis to optimize passive solar gain– interacts with the design of outside pathways and the hydrological system of the website. Openings, natural light, and outside spaces are coordinated to make sure seamless continuity between interior and landscape. Licensed LEED v4 Gold, the project demonstrates how integrated style can give form to civic centers that unite ecological performance, spatial quality, and a strong sense of place.A territorial chauffeur
