In Berlin’s Mitte district, a new quarter prepared by Herzog & de Meuron takes its name from the heritage-listed Kunsthaus Tacheles structure. Dealing with one of the complex’s internal courtyards, the curvy facade of a residential structure, likewise developed by Herzog & de Meuron, easily turns heads. It’s not surprising that Chilean designer and ArchDailycreator David Basulto and his better half, Ukrainian beauty therapist Valeriia Karas, chose to call it home. To make the 900-square-foot apartment their own, they got in touch with Kyiv-based company balbek bureau to perform a complete redesign.
“I noticed their work is constantly really forward looking. And it’s always comfy,” Basulto informed AN Interior.“But also, as an architect, I was always looking at the details. I had this sense that in Ukraine, there was an excellent approach to fabrication in wood, steel, and stone, which I saw in balbek’s tasks.”
Dealing with the couple’s eclectic set of motivations– consisting of the Japandi-style Soho House (Basulto and Karas satisfied at a celebration at its Berlin place in 2017), the work of Sabine Marcelis, and an asked for table and chairs by Sarah Ellison– Balbek broadened on the structure’s slogan: Living in your house of great aesthetics. This consisted of the cautious selection of materials, consisting of stone, wood, and steel; color; irregular lighting and furnishings; and custom-made components. Together, this technique resulted in a fine-tuned, yet cozy space that offers “a lighter environment that you feel right away,” as Basulto stated.
