light and shadow shape Ekadea Ceramic Workshop in Milan
Ekadea Studio is a ceramic workshop created by AACM– Atelier Architettura Chinello Morandi in Milan, Italy. Conceived as a covering space, its kind emerges from shadow and accompanies visitors as they cross the threshold. Curved walls rise from the base and define functions, paths, and limits. A wooden structure, perforated to frame looks or strong to accommodate recurring areas, develops a rhythm of thresholds and shelter. Light spreads in a filtered, soft, fragile way, generating fields of shadow that boost the artisanal gesture and the materiality of the surfaces. The risen ceiling softens the contrasts of the penumbra, tracing veils of chiaroscuro that highlight the texture of the wood, the sinuosity of the type, and the irregularity of the product. Shadow is not the lack of light, however a discreet presence: it covers, safeguards, and returns intimacy to the space.

At the center, the okumè plywood worktable becomes the centerpiece and measure of the space, while a shōji hides the presence of other gestures: the tea event and the work at the potter’s wheel appear in looks without losing their intimacy, upon a base clad in rice-straw tatami that defines their ritual limit. The curved walls and openings assist the look from one minute to the next, ensuring visual continuity while also keeping personal privacy. Niches carved into the walls hold tools, containers, and little items, contributing to the functional order of the studio. The job by innovative practice AACM– Atelier Architettura Chinello Morandi stems from the desire to use a sanctuary from the sped up rhythm of the city and looks for a balance in between shelter and openness, in between tradition and contemporaneity: a determined area where time stretches out. In the penumbra, every information and every kind gain prominence in their apparent simplicity.
