It’s easy– we collect around water. To drink, to shower, to swim, water has actually been important to every society, at every point in our relatively brief history here on earth. We connect, consume, and extend ourselves over water, a lifegiving force whose polarity explains much of human habits. Fostering this sense of community is essential to our health and joy also– yet with less and less 3rd spaces to pick from, how precisely are we expected to curate community with work, life, and the million other things that require our attention? Get in The Water Fountain by Neon, a space to satisfy, relax, and play in an area that everybody can delight in.

Centered directly on the Community Square at Brent Cross Town in London, the water fountain increases out of the earth, a strikingly green centerpiece to contrast well with the surrounding red brick buildings. Alike to weightless layers of an impossible cake, the tiers of the water fountain are offset, enabling the streaming water to waterfall down to the pavement below. The fins that line the layers provide not just visual interest, but a surprisingly diffusive effect to the water, slowing its unavoidable path downward.

The color here is brilliant, an intense neon green enhancing the layers. In shadows and highlights, a lime green emerges, pastels, and even a cool emerald emerge, dancing and changing with the water’s path and time of day. This grounds us in the minute: each 2nd an unique yet ephemeral page in the book of time, beholden to the natural forces that rule us all. We are forced to focus on the path of time, when a lot of our lives are lost in the mire of the past, or the tension of the future. The Water fountain’s lime-drenched allure influences us to examine, explore, and commune.
