Led by Yufeng Tu, with style partnership from Jiayu Zhu and Peixuan Wu, the job reimagines geothermal facilities as a public architectural landscape for research study, discovering, and environmental engagement. Influenced by the picture of a breaching whale, the proposal combines laboratories, exhibit areas, and landscape-based knowing within a merged spatial and environmental framework Geothermal Nexus, an internationally acknowledged award-winning proposition, is nestled within the progressing metropolitan fabric of Kársnes, a vibrant peninsula in Kópavogur, Iceland. Shaped by the forces of wind, water, and geothermal energy, the style draws motivation from a breaching whale, symbolizing both the untamed power of Iceland’s landscapes and the fluid combination of architecture and ecology. This immersive research and education center utilizes the peninsula’s geothermal capacity to cultivate a space where sustainability and scientific discovery assemble, echoing Kársnes’role as a bridge between modern innovation and Iceland’s spectacular natural beauty.At the heart of the task is a dedication to self-sufficiency and ecological obligation. Powered entirely by geothermal energy, wind, and solar systems, the facility operates with a zero-carbon footprint, with underground MEP conversion tanks efficiently dispersing energy throughout the site. Steam vents discreetly launch excess energy, creating a landscape that breathes with the rhythms of the earth. The roofscape is both a protective and productive surface area, incorporating geothermal pipelines that sustain greenery while melting snow, enabling the architecture to effortlessly adjust to the Arctic climate. Locally sourced wood building reduces embodied carbon, strengthening a deep connection to Iceland’s material heritage while preserving a forward-thinking contemporary aesthetic.

The spatial organization promotes an open yet structured dialogue between scientists, educators, and the public. The main entryway welcomes visitors into an interesting journey of geothermal innovation, leading them through exhibit spaces that reveal the transformative power of Iceland’s energy landscapes. The auditorium and discovering spaces welcome interest, while the coastal coffee shop uses scenic views of the steaming geothermal shoals, the Atlantic horizon, and far-off mountains. From here, visitors peek the lively activity within the research study wing, where scientists work in labs and workshop areas devoted to advancing sustainable energy services. The carefully choreographed circulation ensures a balance between openness and security, enabling interaction without interrupting the important research conducted within.The landscape itself becomes an important extension of this story, created as a series of experiential layers that showcase Iceland’s abundant geothermal and ecological systems. The Geothermal Shoal Garden immerses visitors in an active geothermal field, while the Geothermal Harvest Garden and Greenhouse show the potential of geothermal-powered agriculture in northern environments. The Researcher Research Premises act as a controlled environment for energy and eco-friendly experimentation, supporting continuous advancements in environment resilience.Above, the Wind Energy Roofing Terrace changes the center’s uppermost aircraft into a dynamic knowing area, enhancing the relationship in between architecture, energy, and the surrounding forces of nature. The Vista Nook and Waterfront Boardwalk provide moments of reflection along the peninsula’s soft edges, where land and sea intertwine. The Farm-to-Table Dining establishment offers a cooking experience rooted in local, geothermal-grown ingredients, while the Sprout Yard invites both researchers and visitors to engage with a biodiverse, resilient landscape.
